Miramonte High School has been competing in water polo since 1967. As one of the most successful scholastic sports programs in the country the Mats have produced 15 Sectional Championship Teams, 25 League Championship Teams, 5 Olympic Team members, 88 High School All American awards and 25 Collegiate All American awards.

James Lathrop
Head Coach - Varsity


James Lathrop was an All American at Miramonte in 1994 & 1995. As a senior, he was captain of the California Berkeley water polo team in 2000. James teaches US and world history at Miramonte HS. He is also active as a coach in Lamorinda Water Polo and the Pacific Zone. The Mats have won NCS titles five times in James' 6 years as Head Coach, and James has been named Contra Costa Times Coach of the Year twice, Pacific Zone Coach of the Year 3 times and California Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2008.

Bill Brown
Coach Emeritus


Bill Brown has been the mainstay of the Miramonte Water Polo program since 1967, when he became the program's first coach. Bill came to Miramonte as a graduate of Cal Poly SLO where he competed in both Football and Basketball. During his 38 years at Miramonte, Bill has developed one of the most successful scholastic sports programs in the US. Bill retired from teaching social studies in 2005 after 39 years of service. He was inducted into the California Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2008 and the National Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2009.

Chris Lathrop
Assistant Coach - Varsity

Chris Lathrop graduated from Miramonte in 1998 and was a two time All-American. Chris was an All-American, team MVP, and captain his senior year at CAL where he played from 1998-2002. Chris played professionally in Spain in Sevilla and Barcelona after graduating college. He currently works in technology consulting in San Francisco and plays water polo for the Olympic Club of San Francisco.

Joey Estrada Head Coach
Soph-Frosh


Joey Estrada graduated from Pinole Valley High School in 1995. Joey played water polo all four years at Pinole, and coached the Varsity women's water polo team at Pinole Valley for 5 years prior to coming to Miramonte in 2004. Joey graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in education. He is an 8th grade teacher at Stewart Middle School, where he teaches English and History.
